Construction of the new, mega-Pathmark supermarket on the old Hills site forced Connie's out of their old location. Their new storefront (if you can picture it) is located next door to Party City. Party City occupies the site of S.H. Kress. Visually, the new Connie's will be in the middle of what used to be a solid wall to the right of the Kress entrance. Life keeps getting stranger and stranger.... |

I left in 1976, so the little cartoons depicting the local hotspots are unfamiliar. I yearned for Martin's, Handfinger's, Mei Mei's, although I think the noisiest restaurant in the world was depicted, Lundy's. I hadn't really felt the pangs of nostalgia until I saw that poster. Now with this guestbook it'll be great to connect with old friends. Linda Greco (Cooper), singer extraordinaire, has contacted me about a reunion. I'm looking forward to your e-mails. |

I graduated P.S. 286 in June 1968, Shell Bank J.H.S. in June 1971 and Sheepshead Bay H.S. in June 1975. Many happy times hanging out on Batchelder Street between Avenues Y and Z, at the P.S. 286 benches and Nostrand Avenue between Avenues Y and Z. I lived in the Kings Bay 2 co-ops until June of 1993 when I moved to Plainview, Long Island. There are many other former Sheepshead Bay people living in Plainview. I can't believe its been nearly 30 YEARS!!! I occasionally skim through Topaz, what nice memories come to mind! I noticed the Topaz pictures online - nice addition! We really were lucky to be part of that experience back then, despite those sometime very turbulent years. I still live in the old neighborhood, have a wonderful wife and 3 daughters. Grew up on E 22 St near Ave X, went to PS206, Shellbank & SBHS 71 (my brother Art, graduated in 1973). I am amazed that so many of our classmates are in Fla. I'm a VP at Citibank/Citigroup in commercial banking and I'm involved with Community Board 15 (SB & Manhattan Bch), on the board of the Kings Bay Y on Nostrand and volunteer a couple of times a year in the Read Aloud program at local schools. What an experience it was going back into PS206 & Shellbank JHS and standing in front of a classroom of kids where I sat 30+ years ago! Last year, I walked into Sheepshead to look around - what a nostalgic experience! I would love to hear from you to rekindle those memories. It's nice to see that so many of our classmates have done well with their lives, being scattered all over the country. Understand that there is a reunion for our class next year - can't wait. Wine Village has moved over to accommodate... Connie's Pizzeria will soon be relocating to the south end of the shopping center, next to Party City (this is where Kress/L.H. Martin/McCrory's used to be). Sal promises that he'll still toss the pies onto the ceiling to add spice. Nothing like Connie's ceiling dust...The site of Jahn's is now occupied by Empire King Buffet. It features the National Theater Workshop of the Handicapped, an organization founded by Rick Curry, S.J. (note the last name!). NTWH provides performing arts classes for disabled people. The NYC workshops have now expanded to Belfast Maine, home to a new residential school for performing and visual arts [domiciled in the high school building featured in the movie Peyton Place...remember Hope Lange??? She actually attended HS in that building and was a guest at the NTWH opening celebration last summer]. Please watch to learn more about an organization that provides positive impact! P.S. I worked at Jahn's as a host and behind the counter. I was trained by the legendary David Cohen, who lived behind that counter. I ran into David a few years ago in Florida. I also worked in the little candy store accross the street from Jahn's. It was referred to as Gerties. Old Gertie croaked in that joint. After that the place was sold to some odd characters. I worked for them. Assembling the Sunday News on Sat night was a drag. The Bay was an extraordinary place. I only wish I knew it then. |
