I grew up in Shore Terrace Co-op's on East 28th Street. I now live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and own my own General Contracting business which I have been doing for over 22 years, besides doing all kinds of other stuff in my years growing up. I am also a semi-pro pool player, which I grew up doing since I was 12 years old. Before I moved to Florida in July of 98, I was visiting the Bay whenever I had the chance to. Whenever I went there to visit, it wasn't like when we were growing up there, well nothing stays the same. ( you should only see it now!!! )very dissapointing. I am wondering if there is anybody out there that remembers me, would be great to hear from any old friends or even Enemies!!!! take care everyone...Later |

I grew up in Sea Crest (next to the Golden Gate), played all kinds of sports in the Kings Bay Little League, went to PS 52, Shellbank, and graduated from SBHS in 1979. I also spent several unforgettable years working at the Marquis Room -- one day I'm going to write a book about that place! ( FYI -- The Marquis Room and Martins have been razed to make room for a Duane Reade Drug Store). I attended grad school at USC and live in LA from 1991-995, but the lure of the bay was too great and I moved back a few years ago. I now live in Battery Park City and handle public education and community affairs for the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management. I try to come back as often as I can to ride the bike path into Floyd Bennet Field and the Rockaways, run through Manhattan Beach and down the Boardwalk into Coney Island, or catch the action on Emmons Avenue. There really is no place like Sheepshead Bay! I recently got back in touch with Glenn Izzo, and it's been fun talking about the "old" days and all the old friends. I'd love to hear from all of you! |

I went to PS286, Shellbank JHS and graduated from Sheepshead Bay HS in 1971. I live in Central New Jersey now. My wife is from NJ and I have 3 beautiful girls. I took them to Coney Island recently and they experienced the DISCO BUMPER CARS and Nathans french fries . They also love Mrs. Stahls Knishes on the corner of Brighton Beach Ave. and Coney Island Ave. I would never trade the memories of growing up in Brooklyn for anything else. Those were GREAT years. And yes I also remember Charlie and Georgie the knish and ice cream men. Let's not forget the creepy guys who sold pretzels outside the school from shopping carts. P.S. One day in the late 70's, I, Jay Marshak and Evan Kertes, were standing around in Santa Monica, California, when we saw a man who looked like Charlie. We called out his name and sure enough he turned around. (he was not in a truck. He was on foot.) It turned out he retired and moved to sunny California where his grown daughter lived. |

Charlie you will remember had a little square mustache just like everyones favorite Nazi! We would get endless delight from sieg-heiling him and having him chase us all around the neighborhood. Georgie on the other hand was a pal. In the early days he used to have a Good Humor type truck. His giant black poodle used to sometimes ride with him in the front seat. He would amuse us kiddies by dangling one of his cigars from the poodles mouth. As I remember he used to put us up to saluting Charlie (his rival) and pay us off in candy. Then he got his big white truck with a grill which sadly blew up leaving Georgie pretty badly burned. Happily he survived and continued to sell his greasy knishes (Charleies were better) for some years to come. Sheepshead bay is still cool. The last of the Marshaks is packing it in and heading down to the Jewish Elephant Graveyard. Oh well the memories will never die. |

When I went to sort the names, the names sorted but the hyperlinks didn't (Found out From Microsoft, that there's a little bug in Excel) Anyhow to make a long story short, Steve Brooks figured out a solution (Thanks Steve, your check is in the mail -NOT!, oh and thanks for the SBHS letter "S" Gif file I "borrowed" too.) This should solve a major problem that has existed with the 1970 Topaz for the last 28 years (is Technology great, or what?) namely of having four different sections of student pictures. I have communicated with quite a few of the people that made growing up in Brooklyn. While I love living in NJ, I regret that my kids will miss that extraordinary and unparalleled experiance. But then again, it is clearly a different experience. I have read a few hundred of these messages on three decades of graduating years. The common memory virtually all of the participants have is of the eating establishments. Handfingers, Connies, Angelos, Seniors, Martins, ( Nobody said Versaille), Brennnen and Carr, Roll N Roaster, Popeys etc. But far and away the most common restaurant cited is Mei-Mei for their world reknown and exclusive Rice with Gravy. I ate tons of that stuff. Cheap, hot and delichous. I have in fact fairly well duplicated the gravy on my stove. 1/2 cup Oyster Sauce mixed and heated with one can of chicken broth.Dissolve two heaping tablespoons of flour in cool water or broth. Add it slowly and off the heat, to the heated broth mixture, stirring out the lumps. Easy. It is fairly close if not dead on. Now if I can nail down Brennan & Carr! |

This site was thrilling if just for the photos but to find the message board was the overwhelming. I saw many names that I think I recognized but I saw many that I know. I wrote to people in both categories. I never expected to see so many familiar names from my childhood all in one place. Is the web not awesome? I looked at all 243 posts. It amazed me how many people are here . My dad sold my childhood home on Haring between Z and Voorhees, just last year so I was connected to the bay till then. EVerybody mentioned Mei-Mei and Moongate and Handfingers but what about Brennan & Carr! I went to 52 then Shell Bank 66-67. After that I went to Tech so I lost regular touch with much but not all of the bay crowd. Then on to college in Boston then on to trying to make a life. I have a son age 14 and a daughter age 10 and live in NJ. Thanks for making this forum available. |

Mann Jr. H.S. in Bergen Beach/Mill Basin and graduated from there in 1969 Followed by James Madison High School which I graduated from in 1972. I married a guy named Joe Spinosa who graduated from Sheepshead High School in 1968 or so. We divorced in 1984. Joe passed away last year. I remarried a great guy in 1989 and we moved to New Mexico (yes, it is one of the 50 states!) Anyone out there who can remember a skinny girl with long dark hair and long skinny legs e-mail me!!! I would love to find people from Junior High or High School and see what they are up to? I thought I once filled this out, but I can't find it here anymore. Oh well. It's been great hearing from old friends from the Bay. Sometimes, I still feel like a stranger in a strange land in CA. I'm trying to explain to my 8-year old how in Brooklyn, groups of kids would call for their friends and would play outside all day. Here, kids stay in the house during the nicest part of the day and then come out with an hour of light left. I've decided that California kids must be vampires. Unknown sports here in Southern CA: Stickball & Paddleball. I get blank stares if I mention these, unless the person I'm talking to is from "back East". Once I made the mistake of asking for a "hero" in an Italian restaurant. Again, blank stares. Only Sub or Hoagie rings a bell here. On my missed most list: Connies pizza on Nostrand, Mei Mei, Roma of Ave. U HEROS, and Lu Ming on Bedford and U potstickers. Whoops, I think I just drooled all over the keyboard. Things I miss least: scraping the ice off of my windshield on a cold February morning. Brrrr. I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks they knew me. Larry |

Played in a band in high school. Rehearsed at the Kings Bay "Y" when they were at 3643 Nostrand. One time, David Schaer (who was bandleader for senior sing) busted into one of our rehearsals, thinking we were the senior band. Took him a few moments to realize that we were civilians. Speaking of Senior Sing, got the whole thing on cassette...hope to see all of you soon. |
