I had a unique experience today. My office is in the five towns area and I live on the NorthShore of Long Island. I stopped at a local kosher deli called the Woodro and while I was ordering dinner for my family I noticed a very familiar gentleman standing next to me. It turned out to be my favorite history teacher from 10th and 11th grade Mr Powers. I had not seen hin since high school over 32 years ago ( I was class of 69). When i asked him if he was Mr Powers he said it is but his name is Neil. When I introduced myself reminding him of the nickname he gave me in class "Doctor Fox" he remembered me,we chatted for a while and exchanged numbers. He left Sheepshead a year after I graduated. When I told him he was my favorite teacher, he said it made his day. The look on his face was proof enough. Hi to all. Hope to speak to some of my old friends. |

During the summer of 1995, I took a class at Rutgers University, and there was a nice retired couple who audited the class. They sat right next to me, so I had some nice long conversations with them over the six weeks of the course. The man's name was Morris Brown, and he was a retired teacher. I thought there was something very familiar about him. I later found out in the course of conversation that he had taught history and economics. He was also a dean for a couple of years. It wasn't until the very last week of summer school that I realized that he was Mr. Brown, my economics teacher at SBHS. I then brought my 1966 Topaz to class, and he and his wife enjoyed looking through it. A couple of years ago, I saw them shopping in Walmart. So, as far as I know, Mr. Brown, the Economics teacher is still alive and well. |

Seemed like a million years ago until I started looking through the guestbook and the yearbook, when I found that I recognized many many names...all delightfully and blissfully frozen in time, of course! Been living here in Colorado since 1972 after leaving Southern Illinois University. Married for 18 years, now divorced, but with 20-year-old son who's at the Univ. of Colo. I've been working in publishing for years, now as editor of a trade magazine that covers the medical supply industry. I'm very lucky as I get to telecommute on a full-time basis. I'd love to hear from some SBHS people, especially Ted Katz, Andy Felix, Mark Rosner, Steve Lascher, Leni Zack, Susan Friedman and Gary Edelman. We had Plumb Beach, the rocks, Max's Bungalows, Greenlawn and the "Baron" (K of C"). We shopped at Greenwald's and Doc's (Litman's drug store) and ran through the courts. We hung out in the old houses and fished off the pier. We worked in the boat yards, Bay End, Bob's, Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen's and the Zito's gave us all work at the Hickory Q. Drop me a note. |

I lived at 2236 Batchelder (yes, I was chased off the grass by Officer Carr), and then on E 24th and V. It's terrific to go through these listings. I remember relatively few names (hey, 4,200 kids -- nearly 1,000 graduating), but all the places -- (a veal parmigian hero is unknown in upstate New York). I didn't remember high school as fondly as the sit-coms portray it, but I'm re-living it through my 14 year old daughter and these listings help a lot. Also, I'll pass on messages for my sister Susan Appel (Honeyman), PS 52/206, Shellbank, and SBHS '63. One more thing -- I am not the Steve Appel who graduated in 1968. I've never met the guy, and my only comment is that on a blind date at Brooklyn College, the girl was relieved I wasn't him. I went to ps52, 286, shellbank and graduated from sbhs in 68. I loved reading all the postings and descriptions of sights, sounds and activities we all shared. I too remember hanging out at martins and being kicked off the corner by cops from the 61st precinct. And i remember my friend willy being knocked around by those cops and arrested for back-talking. He had to be rescued by gregory's dad (also a cop) at the stationhouse. i remember drinking rheingold or shaeffers out of quart bottles in the project park across from martins and listening to mo berger sing "apple, peaches, pumpkin pie.." in yiddush. it still cracks me up to think about it. this has to have been an amazingly unique and special cultural experience and i'm surprised no one has written a book about it. its really hard for "outsiders" to understand why we get so nostalgic about our neighborhood and experience isn't it? hope to hear from old friends and people i havent heard from since hs like andi ringer, reed kaplan, robin kessler, barney tochterman, reva rossman, honey cohn, david sobel, etc. |

Elayne Boosler was there along with the sports announcer Russ Salsberg (fancy sweater guy)--The hi-lite of the evening was Vincent Chellimi singing!!! ANd he can sing!!!!
